Construction Period:
  June 2007 thru June 2008
Project Value:
  $36 Million

Scope of Work:

The four-unit coal fired Crystal River complex, located near Crystal River, Fla., includes two units built in the 1960s (Crystal River South, totaling 865 MW) and two units built in the 1980s (Crystal River North, totaling 1,437 MW).

The site also includes the Crystal River Nuclear Plant. Coastal Caisson installed the foundations for the Units 3 & 4 Clean Air Project, installing foundations for the new SCR & FGD units.

Coastal Caisson work consisted of installing 1,200 – 36” Drilled shafts to depths ranging from 60 feet to 120 feet in depth.

Due to the highly variable soil conditions and the cavernous nature of the limestone in this area, the design called for the use of permanent casing in all of the shafts, extending down to the top of the competent rock (60 to 100 feet).  Coastal Caisson used a fleet of four Bauer BG Rotary Drills, thus completing this project with one of the most modern fleets of equipment available anywhere in the world.

The equipment and permanent casing design allowed Coastal Caisson to complete our work ahead of schedule, while minimizing unknown risks, thus protecting the overall construction deadlines and goals.
